A North Korean missile appeared to explode within seconds of launch on Wednesday morning, the U.S. Pacific command said.

A report in Japan’s state news agency also said several missiles may have been fired from the east of the country, in a launch that appears to have failed.

South Korea’s state media is also saying that Seoul believes a missile launch from the North “did not go off normally.”

So far there’s been no clear indication of the number of rockets involved, or what type they were.

The initial report from the Kyoto news agency cited an official from the Japanese government.

Tokyo’s Defense Ministry has not confirmed whether or not an attempted launch took place, only saying nothing has directly threatened Japan’s national security.
