Federal authorities have filed attempted murder charges against the 10 armed individuals who attacked law enforcement officers at a Texas immigration detention facility over the fourth of July weekend, leaving one police officer wounded.

The incident unfolded Friday night at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Dallas. An Alvarado police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the neck during the confrontation; he was treated at a hospital and released, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas, the assault began when suspects wearing black military-style clothing initiated their attack by launching fireworks at the facility. The strategy appeared calculated, the attorney’s office said.

"The attack seemed to be designed to draw U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel outside the facility, and it worked," said Nancy Larson, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

Following approximately 10 minutes of initial activity, one or two individuals separated from the main group and began vandalizing vehicles and a guard structure in the parking area with spray paint, the attorney’s office <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/ten-individuals-charged-attempted-murder-federal-officers-and-firearms-offenses">said</a> in a July 8 press release. The graffiti included inflammatory language such as "Traitor" and "Ice Pig.”

The violence escalated when correctional officers called 911 to report suspicious activity, prompting the response of an Alvarado police officer. As two unarmed corrections officers engaged with the group in the detention center's parking lot, someone positioned in nearby woods appeared to communicate using a flashlight signal, according to a criminal complaint.

When the Alvarado police officer arrived on scene, a suspect concealed in the woods opened fire, striking the officer in the neck area. At the same time, another attacker positioned across the street discharged 20 to 30 rounds toward the unarmed correctional officers who had stepped outside the facility.

"Another assailant, who was across the street, nowhere near the corrections officers, shot 20 to 30 rounds at these unarmed corrections officers," Larson said.

Law enforcement officials recovered a lot of evidence at the scene, including an AR-style rifle that had jammed during the attack, according to Larson.

Additional items found according to police included a flag bearing the message, "Resist fascism, fight oligarchy," and flyers containing phrases such as "Fight ICE terror with class war" and "Free all political prisoners.”

Following the shooting, the attackers fled the scene but were quickly caught by sheriff's deputies approximately 300 yards from where the officer was wounded, Larson said. Seven suspects were detained in the immediate area, with some wearing body armor, covered in mud, armed, and carrying two-way radios.

Deputies also intercepted a van leaving the area, discovering two AR-style rifles and a pistol, along with ballistic-style vests and a helmet. The driver acknowledged his presence at the detention center and stated he had connected with others online, transporting them from Dallas to "make some noise,” according to the criminal complaint.

The 10 defendants face serious federal charges, including three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. The charged individuals are Cameron Arnold, Savannah Batten, Nathan Baumann, Zachary Evetts, Joy Gibson, Bradford Morris, Maricela Rueda, Seth Sikes, Elizabeth Soto, and Ines Soto.

An additional person, who was not named, faces charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy for allegedly attempting to conceal and destroy evidence, Larson said.

"Make no mistake, this was not a peaceful protest," Larson said. "This was an ambush on federal and local law enforcement officers. This increasing trend of violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas."

The timing of the attack coincides with the Trump administration's expansion of deportation efforts, which received significant funding through recently enacted legislation.

If convicted, defendants face minimum sentences of ten years in federal prison and maximum penalties of life imprisonment.
