More than 100,000 visas have been revoked since President Donald Trump took office, marking a 159 percent increase from 2024, according to the U.S. State Department on Monday.

This includes about 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas for individuals who had encounters with U.S. law enforcement for criminal activity.

“We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the State Department <a href="https://x.com/StateDept/status/2010740549469557010?s=20">wrote on X</a>.

Overstays, driving under the influence, assault, and theft were the top leading causes for the revocations, according to State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

The State Department has also launched a <a href="https://www.dcsa.mil/Personnel-Vetting/Continuous-Vetting/">Continuous Vetting Center</a> to ensure that foreign nationals in the United States continue to be lawful and that the visas of those who pose a threat to Americans are "swiftly revoked," Pigott said.  Continuous vetting is a process that involves regularly reviewing the background of a person who has already been cleared, <a href="https://www.dcsa.mil/Personnel-Vetting/Continuous-Vetting/">according to the agency</a>.

Trump signed an executive order shortly after taking office in his first term to restrict and limit the entry of foreign nationals. In his second term in office, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/12/restricting-and-limiting-the-entry-of-foreign-nationals-to-protect-the-security-of-the-united-states/">Trump said</a> that the United States must continue to uphold strict visa-issuance and immigration processes to weed out foreign nationals who intend to harm Americans or national interests.

Monday’s new figures from the State Department follow an announcement in November 2025 that it had revoked around 80,000 non-immigrant visas since Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, for offenses ranging from driving under the influence to assault and theft.

The Trump administration has adopted a stricter policy on granting visas, including social media vetting and expanded screening.

The State Department this year has ordered U.S. diplomats abroad to remain vigilant against visa applicants who may have a history of political activism and may be considered hostile to the United States.

Trump administration officials previously announced that student visa holders and lawful permanent residents with "green cards" are subject to deportation over their support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel's conduct in the war in Gaza. Such rhetoric and actions pose a threat to U.S. foreign policy, according to officials.

Last month, the Trump administration suspended the "Diversity Visa" program in the wake of the shooting at Brown University. The "disastrous" lottery program allowed the suspected Brown University shooter to enter the United States and granted him a green card, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Trump tried to eliminate the program in 2017 after an ISIS terrorist who entered the program rammed his truck and killed eight people in New York City.
