Two Arizona law enforcement officials were killed Wednesday evening when their helicopter crashed while responding to an active shooter situation in Flagstaff, authorities said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Ranger helicopter was called out to provide tactical air support to the Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) and other law enforcement agencies during an officer-involved shooting in a neighborhood north of U.S. Route 66 between Thompson Street and Mark Lane, a <a href="https://www.azdps.gov/news/releases/1094">statement</a> reads.

"Tragically, during the incident, the helicopter crashed, killing both the pilot and the trooper/paramedic on board," officials said.

The FPD <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FlagstaffPoliceDepartment/posts/pfbid02PKXJVwvzjsV5uYVwT4trYUjqBzfjQNYjab56xK8eLmyL7BgKNv6ru1Fxrapt85gBl">issued</a> an alert about the shooting on Facebook, urging residents to avoid the area and shelter in place. Officials later said the active shooter situation had been contained and that an investigation was underway.

"Please avoid the area and find an alternative route of travel," the FPD <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FlagstaffPoliceDepartment/posts/pfbid02Nq8QyFhbN5Bt4nBbdp3i2KeCfiJ2g84Gh6Wqgi4HMjQcVcDP5LygBx5u8n9C15HBl">shared</a>. "There will be ... police presence for the next several hours. There is no ongoing threat to the public."

During a news briefing Thursday morning, Flagstaff Police Chief Sean Connolly said officers had been called to a domestic violence incident at around 8:30 p.m., when the male suspect opened fire, AZ Family <a href="https://www.azfamily.com/2026/02/05/2-dps-crewmembers-killed-helicopter-crash-flagstaff/">reported</a>.

Police were able to neutralize the suspect, whose name has not yet been shared, approximately two hours later. He suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds and was taken into custody, the AZDPS said. No one else was injured during the incident.

The identities of the pilot and trooper-paramedic have also not yet been released. However, the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police told AZ Family that the pilot, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, had been with the AZDPS since May 2021, while the trooper-paramedic joined the agency in June 2022.

"This is a devastating moment for the DPS family, the FOP, and our state’s law enforcement community," Michael Hunt, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 32, told the publication.

"Our fallen trooper served with honor and courage, answering the call to protect others. Both the paramedic, and the pilot, a military veteran, made the ultimate sacrifice while supporting the mission. Their loss is profound, and our hearts are with their families, friends, and colleagues."

NTD reached out to the FPD and the AZDPS for comment, but no additional information was provided.

The AZDPS Major Incident Division is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, officials said. The agency is also investigating the helicopter crash with the assistance of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
