Trump Calls Iran's Response to Latest US Ceasefire Proposal 'Totally Unacceptable'

Two Pennsylvania State Troopers were shot and wounded Thursday morning while responding to a call in rural northeastern Pennsylvania.

The shooting occurred in Susquehanna County, along Route 171 near the village of Thompson, according to Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson trooper Logan Brouse.

The area is approximately 163 miles north of Philadelphia and borders New York. Officials said a suspect who ambushed and shot the troopers died Thursday, without releasing any further details.

Both troopers were taken to local hospitals following the attack, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro stated Thursday in a <a href="https://x.com/GovernorShapiro/status/1953519643567497391">post</a> on X. “Today, two Pennsylvania State Troopers were shot while responding to a call in Susquehanna County. Both Troopers were transported to local hospitals – and I’ve communicated with Colonel Paris and am on my way to join them now,” Shapiro wrote. “Lori and I are praying for these brave Troopers, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and every member of the State Police.”

At an event outside Philadelphia, Shapiro reiterated the seriousness of the situation and the state’s response: “I want you to know I’ve communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene. It is an active situation and at the conclusion of this event I plan to head there myself,” Shapiro said.

Colonel Christopher Paris, who heads the Pennsylvania State Police, is actively involved in the investigation and responded to the scene, said.

Residents and travelers are urged to avoid Route 171 as a precaution. “The Pennsylvania State Police ask that the public avoid the area of the incident, located on Route 171. Please follow the directions of local law enforcement,” the governor wrote.

By midafternoon, Angelica Howell, a deputy coroner in Susquehanna County, reported she was en route to the scene of the shooting. She said authorities requested that the coroner’s office respond, although they did not clarify whether there were any confirmed fatalities beyond those injured troopers.

Messages of support for the wounded troopers and their families emerged quickly from state and federal officials. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) <a href="https://x.com/SenMcCormickPA/status/1953508407236837468">posted</a> on social media, “Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge.”

Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-Pa.) also <a href="https://x.com/RepBresnahan/status/1953507778586108341">commented</a> on X, saying he was “relieved to hear the troopers involved in today’s incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.”

Authorities provided no updates on the identity or motivation of the shooter as the situation continued to unfold Thursday afternoon, and no additional injuries were confirmed at the time.
