Both pilots involved in the mid-air helicopter crash in southern New Jersey on Sunday have died, Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel confirmed Monday.

Both men were described as experienced aviators who were acquaintances in the tight-knit aviation community.

Kenneth L. Kirsch, 65, of Carney's Point, and Michael Greenberg, 71, of Sewell, died when their helicopters collided near Hammonton Municipal Airport at approximately 11:25 a.m., Friel said in a press release.

Residents in the area helped remove Kirsch from the helicopter that crashed into the tree line. He was pronounced dead at Cooper Hospital after being airlifted there, while Greenberg was declared deceased at the crash scene.

Only the two pilots were aboard the aircraft at the time of the collision.

The two men were more than colleagues—they were friends who regularly met for breakfast at a local café near where their aircraft went down, according to Sal Silipino, owner of the eatery.

Silipino described the moment he and other customers witnessed the crash. "It was shocking," Silipino said. "I'm still shaking after that happened."

Silipino said he watched the helicopters take off before seeing one helicopter spiral down, followed moments later by the second.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the aircraft involved as an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C. FAA records indicate Kirsch was the registered owner of one helicopter, while M&M Charter LLC of Mountville, Pennsylvania, was listed as the registered owner of the other.

Emergency responders reached the crash site in a farm field approximately one and a half miles from the airport in the 100 block of Basin Road. One of the helicopters was engulfed in flames, which the Hammonton Volunteer Fire Department extinguished.

Witness accounts describe the helicopters flying in close proximity moments before impact. Dan Dameshek, a Hammonton resident, gave details of what he witnessed while leaving a gym.

"Immediately, the first helicopter went from right side up to upside down and started rapidly spinning, falling out of the air," Dameshek <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/crash-hammonton-airport-south-jersey/4323795/">told NBC10</a>. "And then it looked like the second helicopter was OK for a second, and then it sounded like another snap or something ... and then that helicopter started rapidly spinning out of the air."

The FAA  and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were on the scene Monday.

Alan Diehl, a former crash investigator for both the FAA and the NTSB, offered a preliminary analysis of what investigators will likely examine.

"Virtually all midair collisions are a failure to what they call 'see and avoid,'" Diehl said.

He noted that investigators will probably focus on communications between the pilots and their ability to maintain visual contact with each other.

"Clearly they'll be looking at the out-of-cockpit views of the two aircraft and seeing if one pilot was approaching from the blind side," Diehl added.

Hammonton is a town of approximately 15,000 residents in Atlantic County, southern New Jersey, roughly 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The area has agricultural roots and sits near the Pine Barrens, a forest covering more than 1 million acres across New Jersey.
