Four people were killed and nearly 30 others were injured on Tuesday after fierce winds whipped up blinding clouds of dirt along Interstate 25 south of Pueblo, Colorado. The blinding dust clouds set off a chain of crashes involving more than 30 vehicles, including six semitrailers, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The collisions occurred around 10 a.m. as powerful gusts swept over the region, turning the air into a thick, reddish haze that reduced visibility.

“Visibility was next to nothing,” Maj. Brian Lyons of the Colorado State Patrol said. “It was like a brown-out.”

Authorities said pileups happened on both sides of the interstate, but only the northbound lanes saw fatalities. Crashes along the southbound side caused property damage but no deaths, according to police.

Twenty-nine people were transported to area hospitals with both minor and severe injuries. One of the vehicles caught in the chaos was a pickup truck towing a trailer carrying livestock—32 goats in total. Four of the animals died, police said.

The scene unfolded about two miles from the city of Pueblo, leaving debris scattered across the highway and forcing lengthy closures. According to a Colorado State Patrol <a href="https://www.cotrip.org/home#notifications">travel alert</a>, I-25 northbound was shut down between mile markers 91 and 94 while crews worked through the wreckage. Traffic was rerouted to nearby frontage roads, and officials offered no immediate estimate for when the interstate would reopen.

Trooper Sherri Mendez said investigators are still piecing together the exact cause of the massive pileup, noting that while the lack of visibility will be taken into consideration as one of the contributing factors, other factors may also exist.

The deadly crashes came as the eastern half of Colorado battled intense windstorms that swept across open plains, stirring dust and increasing fire danger. The National Weather Service issued high wind watches for areas east of I-25 and winter storm warnings for the mountain regions, warning of dangerous travel conditions through Thursday.

Winds also contributed to flight delays at Denver International Airport and fanned multiple wildfires across the region. Meanwhile, the western mountain ranges saw heavy snow that provided desperately needed water to the state’s drought-stricken areas.

Officials urged drivers to stay alert for quickly changing conditions. “Travelers should be aware of the possibility of blowing dust and high winds creating visibility issues in the area,” state patrol said in the travel alert.

Colorado’s incident follows another massive highway pileup a month earlier in <a href="https://www.ntd.com/100-vehicles-pile-up-in-michigan-crash-as-snowstorm-moves-across-the-country_1120546.html">Michigan</a>, where more than 100 vehicles crashed or skidded off Interstate 196 southwest of Grand Rapids amid whiteout conditions. According to the Michigan State Police, the collisions involved more than 30 semitrailers and left numerous people injured, though no deaths were reported. Drivers described near-zero visibility as snow whipped across the highway.
