A youth hockey game descended into chaos Monday afternoon when a gunman opened fire inside a Rhode Island ice arena, killing two people before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities.

Three others were rushed to hospitals in critical condition following the shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a small city just north of Providence near the Massachusetts border, according to the Pawtucket Police Department.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said during a news conference that the violence appeared to stem from a personal conflict rather than a random attack.

"It appears that this was a targeted event—that it may be a family dispute," Goncalves told reporters.

The chief did not release the identities of the suspect or the two victims but indicated that both of those killed appeared to be adults. Investigators were still working to reconstruct the sequence of events and interview witnesses at the scene, according to Goncalves.

NTD News has contacted the police department for further details as they become available but has not received a response prior to publication.

The shooting unfolded as young athletes were on the ice for a high school hockey matchup. Outside the arena in the aftermath, families clutched one another while teenage hockey players, still wearing their uniforms, embraced before climbing onto buses to leave.

Roads around the arena were blocked off as a heavy law enforcement presence took hold of the area. Helicopters circled overhead as officers secured the scene.

Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to assist state and local authorities, according to a <a href="https://x.com/atfboston/status/2023492035513372884?s=46&t=op3KnRWayVQwe0Xuza3lqQ">statement</a> the ATF's Boston field division posted on X.

"The public should avoid the area and follow the directions of Pawtucket police," the ATF wrote.

Providence police said officers were dispatched to the scene to provide support as well, according to a <a href="https://x.com/ProvidenceRIPD/status/2023498824128639353?s=20">post</a> on X from the department.

The game being played at the time involved a co-operative high school hockey team that included players from North Providence High School, North Smithfield, St. Raphael Academy, and Providence Country Day School, the superintendent of North Providence Public Schools Joseph B. Goho told NTD News in an emailed statement.

Goho said the shooting involved spectators and took place around the start of the first period. All students participating in the game were unharmed.

"Fortunately, all students involved in the game are safe," Goho wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to those involved in this tragic incident."

The opposing team from Coventry was also confirmed safe. In a statement, the Coventry School District said all members of its boys hockey team had been accounted for. A Coventry police officer remained on scene with the students, while school staff coordinated transportation and reuniting families with their children.

Coventry Superintendent Don Cowart later posted an update on Facebook confirming that every student had been safely returned to their loved ones and that mental health resources would be made available to the hockey players and their families.

Providence Country Day School said in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/provcountryday/">statement</a> posted to its Instagram story that it was "shocked and saddened by the shooting at today's hockey game," adding that all PCD students, parents, and staff present at the arena were safe. The school said support services would be offered to those in need.

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said he was in contact with Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien and the Rhode Island State Police as they coordinated with local law enforcement at the scene, according to a <a href="https://x.com/GovDanMcKee/status/2023494517509521754?s=20">post</a> on X.

“As Governor, a parent, and a former coach, my heart breaks for the victims, families, students and everyone impacted by the devastating shooting at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket,” McKee <a href="https://x.com/GovDanMcKee/status/2023537472471179624?s=20">wrote</a> in a statement.

He said that agencies across his administration would aid in providing support services to students and families, which can call 9-8-8 to speak with someone “who is there to listen.”

Pawtucket, a city of just under 80,000 residents, had until recently been best known as the longtime home of toymaker Hasbro's headquarters.
