Three firefighters were injured Tuesday morning while responding to a gas explosion at a veterinary medical center, according to the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/1071770278461407">Wilmington Fire Department</a>.

The explosion occurred just after 11 a.m. when a vehicle struck the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, causing a gas line rupture. Emergency responders initially received reports of a gas leak.

Wilmington firefighters were conducting a primary search to verify the building was unoccupied when the explosion occurred. All three injured firefighters were taken to local hospitals—two with non-life-threatening injuries and one suffering severe burns to the hands and arms.

No civilians were inside the building during the incident. The gas supply has been secured and the fire is now under control.

The driver who struck the building initially fled the scene but was later located and taken into custody by the Wilmington Police Department. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Emergency crews continued securing the area, with authorities requesting the public to avoid New Centre Drive and the surrounding areas, according to the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/WilmingtonPD/">Wilmington Police Department</a>.

The Wilmington explosion echoes a series of recent industrial incidents both in the United States and abroad. Earlier this summer, a <a href="https://www.ntd.com/huge-explosion-at-rome-gas-station-injures-at-least-27-people_1077172.html?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_content=NTDnews&fbclid=IwY2xjawMRr45leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFBcThveDhhODR5M2ZpcU1CAR57Y6jLtjvKSZOMPtqpbhEh03n-DLTpARHg-ly7-3wP38XWH44P4jfhBT_VDA_aem_bNAn4hIa7hp071jyeA-rUg">blast</a> at a petrol station in Rome’s Prenestino district injured at least 45 people, including a dozen police officers and six firefighters, according to Italian authorities. That explosion, which took place just after 8 a.m., was triggered after a truck collided with a fuel pipeline during refilling operations, causing a gas leak and subsequent fire.

The impact of the blast was felt across the city, with two individuals suffering critical burns and requiring ventilation, according to Italian news agencies. Firefighters and ambulance workers who had responded to the initial gas leak call were injured in the blast, and photographs from the scene showed flames and smoke towering over the neighborhood, reported local outlets such as Roma Today. Rome’s mayor indicated that immediate evacuations—including at an adjacent youth camp—helped prevent further casualties.

A similar <a href="https://www.ntd.com/deadly-explosion-at-us-steel-plant-may-have-resulted-from-gas-valve-failure-during-maintenance_1085289.html">tragedy</a> occurred more recently at the U.S. Steel Clairton plant near Pittsburgh, where a deadly explosion killed two workers and injured 10 others, according to statements from U.S. Steel and company officials. Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion happened as employees were flushing a gas valve ahead of routine maintenance, causing pressure to build and a subsequent leak of coke oven gas that ignited, the company said in a Friday release.

The force of the Clairton blast, which erupted around 11 a.m., rocked surrounding communities and heavily damaged parts of the sprawling coking facility, while a towering plume of black smoke was seen for miles. Investigations are ongoing, and the company has pledged to share details first with affected families and employees, especially those at the plant.

U.S. Steel’s CEO said that support services have been made available to all workers and their families, stating, “the work we do is important and often challenging, but it should never, under any circumstances, come at the expense of safety”. Local officials have met with those impacted as the investigation proceeds.
