Three people were killed and two others injured Thursday afternoon when a helicopter went down off the coast of Hawaii, authorities said.

The helicopter was carrying one pilot and four passengers when it crashed near Kalalau Beach on the island of Kauai around 3:45 p.m. local time, the Kauai Police Department (KPD) <a href="https://www.kauai.gov/County-Press-Releases/Helicopter-Crash-at-Kalalau-Beach-Results-in-Multiple-Fatalities">shared</a> in a press release.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue for treatment, officials said.

KPD said the Hughes 500 aircraft was operated by Airborne Aviation, a popular tour agency in Lihue that offers sightseeing flights along Kauai’s coast. NTD reached out to the company for comment, but a response was not received by publication time.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard's Sector Honolulu, the helicopter crash-landed on a sandbar about 100 yards from Kalalau Beach, an incredibly remote shoreline at the foot of the Kalalau Valley. Located along the rugged Na Pali Coast, the beach is accessible only by foot, kayak, or boat.

Watchstanders immediately dispatched a helicopter, a response boat, and the search and rescue crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry, a 154-foot patrol vessel, to assist.

Multiple other agencies also responded to the scene, including the Kauai Fire Department, the Kauai Emergency Management Agency, American Medical Response, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Video circulating on social media <a href="https://x.com/ResistWire/status/2037487780775756262/video/2">shows</a> the helicopter in the shallow water near the beach as waves crash over it. Rescue crews and several beachgoers can be seen on the sand nearby, some of whom appear to be assisting one of the survivors.

Authorities have not shared any updates on the current conditions of the survivors, and the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

In a statement, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Cmdr. Andrew Williams offered his condolences to the victims' loved ones.

"We are greatly saddened by the loss of three lives in this helicopter crash and thinking of those individuals’ families and friends," Williams <a href="https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4445627/coast-guard-partners-good-samaritans-respond-to-helicopter-crash-on-kauai/">said</a>. "We are also keeping the survivors in our thoughts as they begin their recovery."

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami told Hawaii News Now that his thoughts and prayers were with those involved and praised the coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard and first responders.

"Here on Kauai, whenever somebody puts their feet on our soil, they're one of ours," Kawakami <a href="https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/video/2026/03/27/kauai-mayor-provides-update-helicopter-crash/">said</a>. "We treat them like one of ours. They're a part of our family, and our first responders respond with that spirit in mind."

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
