French authorities have arrested four more suspects in connection with a high-profile heist at the world's most famous museum in Paris.

On Tuesday, law enforcement provided an update on the Oct. 19 robbery at the Louvre Museum in which four thieves made off with jewels worth $102 million.

The suspects have only been identified as two men aged 38 and 39 and two women aged 31 and 40, according to a statement by Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

Police can hold the suspects for questioning for up to four days.

Four other people had already been arrested and placed under formal investigation on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, Beccuau said.

The 39-year-old male suspect was already known to police and is believed to be the fourth member of the so-called "commando team" that carried out the crime. The man is from Aubervilliers, a suburb north of Paris, an area that other suspects have connections to.

The other three alleged members of the main team were among those previously arrested after their DNA was found on the scene or on items linked to the robbery.

The brazen, daytime heist took place after the museum had already opened its doors to the public on a Sunday morning. The suspects climbed an extendable ladder to break into an upper window that looks into the Apollo Gallery. The suspects sliced into jewelry display cases with disc cutters before quickly leaving the scene in scooters.

A total of nine objects were targeted by the criminals. All but one of those items were stolen.

The crown of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie, was found outside the museum. The thieves dropped the crown, which is made of gold, emerald, and diamonds, during their getaway.

The entire Sunday morning robbery only took between six to seven minutes, according to authorities.

The infamous heist exposed the security vulnerability of the world's most visited museum. Roughly nine million people from all over the world visit the museum every year, according to the museum.

Officials have admitted there was inadequate security camera coverage of the outside walls of the museum and no camera overlooking the balcony that was used in the break-in.

A <a href="https://archive.ph/qUlJF">report</a> published last month by France's public audit body said the museum's inability to update its infrastructure was exacerbated by excessive spending on artwork.

Laurence des Cars, the museum's director, acknowledged the security shortcomings.

"I fully take responsibility for these acquisitions, which are the pride of our country and our collections," she told lawmakers. "Work at the Louvre should not be seen as competing with the enrichment of national collections."

The Louvre plans to install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026 as part of measures to tighten security following last month's heist.

So far, no trace of the stolen jewels has been found. The museum has since transferred some of its most precious jewels to the Bank of France.
