The nation's capital was filled with Americans from around the country. July 4 festivities kicked off with a massive parade on Constitution Ave. Spectators lined the streets and waved American flags with joy.

Cara, who came all the way from Iowa with her family, shared why it was important for her to celebrate the day: "Lots of energy here ... So many people have come so far just to see this, and we should be proud to be here," she said.

The parade is a reminder of what it means to celebrate the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Allisyn Rodriguez, a member of the Young Marines, said: "It means that men and women fought for our freedom, they lost their lives. It means that about almost 250 years ago, many brave men, and they got together, and they risked their lives to go against a tyrannical king."

One service member said that though modern politics can be divisive, the day is a reminder that we're one nation.

"Today is not about the negative, and this brings the community together and focuses on a positive and gives everybody a new outlook, hopefully, and more positive outlook on things," said Ryan Duff, a lance corporal from West Virginia.

Freedom of belief is one American value highlighted by the Tian Guo Marching Band.

"We're here to celebrate Independence Day, so really the values of America, religious freedom, and so forth," Christy Kwok, a piccolo player in the band. She hoped to spread the message that "Falun Dafa is good," and of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance—the core tenants of the spiritual discipline.

Many Falun Dafa practitioners have sought refuge in the United States after being persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party. The group has made an appearance in the annual July 4 parade in recent years.

The parade is the start of festivities, with the grand finale at 9 p.m.—fireworks will fill the skies.
