Eight backcountry skiers have been found dead and one remains missing after an avalanche swept through a guided expedition in California’s Sierra Nevada on Tuesday.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon announced during a <a href="https://www.ganjingworld.com/live/1ib3mp3rf3k7qFkE4pCsGuyG91141c">news conference</a> on Wednesday that search efforts have transitioned from rescue to recovery after eight of the nine missing skiers were found deceased.

“Due to the ongoing challenges of the weather and the avalanche conditions, the effort remains ongoing, as well as our search for the remaining skier,” Moon said.

The avalanche struck late on Tuesday morning near Castle Peak, northwest of Lake Tahoe. A 911 call reporting that multiple skiers had been buried came in at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Moon said. Emergency locator beacons also helped guide rescuers to the scene.

“Someone saw the avalanche, yelled avalanche, and it overtook them rather quickly,” said incident commander Captain Rusty Greene of the sheriff’s office.

The group consisted of 15 backcountry skiers, nine women and six men, who were on the final day of a three-day guided trip. Six people survived, including one male guide and five female clients. The survivors range in age from 30 to 55. Two immobile survivors were transported to a hospital for treatment after being evacuated. As of Wednesday, one was stabilized and released, while the other is still being treated with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Authorities initially reported that 16 people were on the trip, but later clarified that the total was 15.

The expedition was operated by Blackbird Mountain Guides, a Truckee-based company that confirmed in a <a href="https://blackbirdguides.com/pages/live-incident-updates">statement</a> that the group, including four guides, was returning to the trailhead when the incident occurred. The company said it is assisting authorities in the ongoing rescue operation.

The skiers had been staying at the Frog Lake huts, owned by the Truckee Donner Land Trust, in a remote area that requires avalanche training and backcountry expertise. The region near Donner Summit receives an average of nearly 35 feet of snow annually.

A powerful winter storm had blanketed the northern Sierra Nevada with heavy snowfall and strong winds in the days leading up to the avalanche. Avalanche <a href="https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/forecasts/avalanche/central-sierra-nevada#/central-sierra-nevada/">warnings</a> had been issued for large sections of the mountain range. About three to 6.5 feet of snow <a href="https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/forecasts/avalanche/central-sierra-nevada#/central-sierra-nevada/weather">fell</a> between Sunday and early Wednesday.

Sheriff Moon said families have been notified. The incident marks the deadliest avalanche in the United States since 1981, when 11 climbers were killed on Mount Rainier in Washington. About 25 to 30 people die in avalanches in the United States every winter, according to the <a href="https://avalanche.org/national-avalanche-center/#:~:text=The%20National%20Avalanche%20Center&text=Snow%20avalanches%20kill%20more%20people,involve%20recreation%20on%20public%20lands.">National Avalanche Center.</a>

In January, a separate avalanche in the same region killed a snowmobiler. He was found buried under the snow and was pronounced dead after rescuers were unable to revive him.
