Democrat Abigail Spanberger <a href="https://apnews.com/article/virginia-first-female-governor-earlesears-spanberger-01f9854a94fdab6e5719096664ee9be1">won</a> Virginia's history-making governor's race on Tuesday night.

Spanberger, 46, defeated her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, in the closely watched matchup to become the state's first female governor.

The Democrat won 57.5 percent of the vote while Earle-Sears won 42.3 percent, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/projects/election-results-2025/virginia/">Associated Press</a>, with 97 percent of votes counted.

Her victory in the commonwealth flips partisan control of the governor’s office.

The race to replace term-limited GOP Gov. Glenn Younkin received national attention, serving as a testing ground for both parties ahead of next year's midterm elections.

President Donald Trump lost the state in three consecutive elections.

Spanberger, a center-left Democrat and former CIA case officer, left her congressional seat to run in the race. Spangberger described the race as an opportunity for Virginia voters to send a message of opposition to the policies coming out of the nation's capital.

Spanberger ran on a pledge to protect the state's economy from the policies of the Trump administration.

The former congresswoman and former CIA case officer dedicated many of her campaign ads to linking her Republican opponent to Trump.

On the campaign trail, the Democrat was forced to answer questions about a year-old text-messaging scandal that plagued the race and thrust her into the national spotlight. In 2022, Virginia's attorney general nominee Jay Jones sent a message to a colleague fantasizing about shooting Republican and then-state House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his children. The text became public and prompted fiery backlash, with Republicans calling Jones unfit to serve.

Spanberger condemned her fellow Democrats' actions and violent political rhetoric in general, but fell short of dropping her support for Jones.

The scandal ultimately didn't affect her chances at cementing her place in history as the state's first female governor.

Also Tuesday, Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi won the lieutenant governor’s race to succeed Earle-Sears.

The midterm elections will settle Senate and House control in dozens of states and determine whether Republicans can maintain those majorities in Washington during the rest of Trump’s presidency.
