American citizen Dennis Coyle touched down on U.S. soil overnight after being held in Taliban captivity in Afghanistan for more than a year.

Coyle landed at Joint Base San Antonio in Texas on Wednesday, where he reunited with family and friends. Footage of his homecoming shows the moment he greeted and hugged his mother and other loved ones in an emotional reunion at the airport hangar.

The Taliban freed Coyle the previous day, with the Foreign Ministry saying his release came on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The 64-year-old academic researcher was detained in January 2025. Afghan authorities accused him of violating laws, but never publicly stated which ones.

Despite his captivity, Coyle spoke about his newfound freedom and detention, revealing in an interview with NewsNation that he actually felt some “sadness” upon leaving. He also noted that not all Afghans are evil people and that his guards treated him well.

“I’m proud to be an American,” Coyle told Chris Cuomo during his flight back to the United States. “I love my country, but yet, God has given me a love for Afghans also. While there’s much joy coming home, much of my life—the last 20 years—has been invested there, and there’s a hint of sadness.”

The State Department earlier this month announced the designation of Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention, accusing it of engaging in “hostage diplomacy.”

But Afghanistan rejected allegations that it detains foreigners to obtain leverage over other countries, claiming people are arrested for violating laws, not to make a deal. Afghan officials said they released Coyle based on “humanitarian sympathy and goodwill.”

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in the wake of the chaotic withdrawal of American troops in 2021, nearly 20 years after they were ousted from power in a U.S.-led invasion following the 9/11 attacks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed Coyle’s release.

“President Trump is committed to ending unjust detentions overseas—Dennis joins over 100 Americans who have been freed in the past 15 months under his second term in office,” Rubio said in a statement. “While this is a positive step by the Taliban, more work needs to be done.”

The White House pointed out that Trump was pressed by News Nation earlier this year about Coyle’s detention in Afghanistan, upon which the president promised to “take very strong position” on his detention.

“Promises made, promises kept,” the White House wrote in a <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2036450018148663625">post</a> on X, sharing a video of the interview in which Trump said, “I’ll take care of it.”
