New images and system updates from Artemis II mission control were made public on Friday.

NASA officials, including Artemis program deputy director Lakiesha Hawkins, said Artemis II is progressing smoothly as the spacecraft passes close to the moon without actually landing on it.

“Since yesterday's trans-lunar injection burn to send the crew around the moon, the mission continues to perform well,” Hawkins said at a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5PLvqX2q8w">press conference</a> on Friday. “Overall, the crew is in great spirits.”

The four-person crew is flying around the moon on an Orion spacecraft.

Highlighted images returned by Orion’s onboard cameras include one captured through a window by Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman showing the Earth receding and twin auroras visible on opposite edges of the planet.

“We continue to learn about our spacecraft as we operate in deep space with crew for the first time,” Hawkins added.

In addition to Wiseman, other astronauts on board the Orion are pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Hammock Koch, and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
<h2>Image Captures Earth's Oceans and Whirling Clouds</h2>
In a second image, the entire globe is visible with its oceans capped by a multitude of whirling clouds.

“It’s great to think that with the exception of our four friends, all of us are represented in this image,” Hawkins said.

Artemis II is the first mission in the Artemis program since the Apollo era, and is NASA’s attempt to return humans to the Moon to establish a sustainable presence there.

The last lunar travel occurred in 1972 aboard the Apollo 17.

At the time of the April 3 briefing, Orion was more than 100,000 miles from Earth.

Hawkins was flanked by Artemis II flight director Judd Frieling and Orion program manager Howard Hu.

“There's enough helium pressure in the tanks itself that it can push out the oxidizer and the fuel without needing to regulate or require more helium from the helium tanks,” Hu said. “So overall, our redundant capabilities are providing the coverage that we need as we move across the mission.”

Redundant capabilities are backup systems, components, or procedures added so the mission can continue if a primary element fails.

A planned trajectory correction burn was initially scheduled but not required after navigation and propulsion systems performed well, according to Frieling.

“This morning when the crew woke up, they had their normal planning conferences and then they were able to do their family conferences,” Frieling said. “So, they were able to talk to their family.”
