Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Senator Bernie Sanders on April 27 over hosting a discussion with AI scientists from both the United States and China about working together against the threat posed by AI.

Bessent wrote that the real threat to AI safety is letting any other nation other than the United States set the global standard. He accused Sanders of inviting Chinese nationals to tell the United States how to regulate AI instead of harnessing American innovation.

Senator Sander’s office did not immediately respond to NTD’s request for comment.

This comes amid the U.S.–China competition for AI dominance. On April 23, the White House said that China has been stealing American AI technology at an industrial scale.
