Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent escalated the Trump administration's pressure campaign on the Federal Reserve.

In an interview on CNBC's "<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/07/21/treasury-secretary-bessent-need-to-examine-whether-the-fed-as-an-institution-has-been-successful.html">Squawk Box</a>" Monday morning, Bessent said the Fed needs an institutional review as to whether or not it has accomplished its mission. Bessent's comments come amid a flurry of criticism by multiple officials in the Trump administration, including President Donald Trump himself, who has been a vociferous critic of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's handling of inflation and federal interest rates.

Bessent was responding to an article that appeared in the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/trump-jerome-powell-fed-chair-defense-4165e69b?gaa_at=eafs&gaa_n=ASWzDAhyf_DlepVYVKmWjYEXWOPaWIhGZD5u2TkpSqBXULKgxkUhemOtF_1WfeL2FxE%3D&gaa_ts=687e6228&gaa_sig=Nb9qTEQZhGTAWiU7YUfbyo4dTwntmdXaWKpBjoIkdyWZrwAobrLJPvIdLrn9jwfOPHZEo3nvbXDHfd4LYUBKqQ%3D%3D">Wall Street Journal</a> Saturday, claiming that he talked Trump down from plans to fire Powell immediately. Powell's term as chairman of the Fed's Board of Governors expires in May 2026.

Besssent criticized the leaker for only having part of the story, and said that outlets like WSJ are not used to a "high-functioning Executive President" like Trump.

Co-host Joe Kernen then asked Bessent what he thought of firing Powell.

“I think that what we need to do is examine the entire Federal Reserve institution and whether they have been successful,” Bessent said. “We should think, 'has the organization succeeded in its mission?' If this were the [Federal Aviation Administration] and we were having this many mistakes, we would go back and look at why has this happened."

Bessent also criticized the Fed for not being able to break out of the academic mindset in the face of a strong economy in practice.

"There was fearmongering over tariffs, and thus far we have seen very little, if any, inflation. We’ve had great inflation numbers. I think this idea of them not being able to break out of a certain mindset—all these Ph.D.'s over there, I don’t know what they do. This is like universal basic income for academic economists.”

Co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin then asked Bessent about comments made by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who said the economy would crash if Powell is fired. Bessent said Warren is entitled to her opinion, but noted that she too has been critical of Powell at times.

"It kind of amuses me that now she's taken the other side of the argument here," he said.

Powell has come under heavy fire from multiple voices in the Trump administration. Trump gave Powell the nickname "Too Late" over his refusal to lower Federal interest rates and has called for him to resign multiple times on his <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/search?q=Powell">Truth Social</a> platform.

In addition to Trump, Federal Housing Finance Authority director William Pulte has called for Powell to either <a href="https://x.com/pulte/status/1935389233063109046">lower interest rates or resign</a>. Pulte also called on Congress to <a href="https://x.com/pulte/status/1940436083495620653">investigate Powell</a> for political bias and allegedly making false statements to the Senate about the renovations at the Fed's Washington, D.C. headquarters, the price tag of which has climbed to some $2.5 billion.

White House Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought has also taken aim at Powell over the exorbitant costs of the renovation. In a <a href="https://x.com/russvought/status/1943362774416883908">July 10 letter</a> to Powell, Vought noted that cost overruns on the renovation amount to more than $700 million while the plans call for decadent amenities like rooftop terrace gardens, water features, and VIP private dining rooms and elevators, along with massive office spaces more than three times the executive standard.

Powell refuted those claims in a <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/foia/files/vought-letter-20250717.pdf">July 17 letter</a> to Vought, noting that much of the costs come from structural renovations to the building; the "rooftop terrace gardens" refer to both a vegetated roof and the front lawn of the building; the water features have been removed from plans; and there are no VIP dining rooms or elevators.
