President Donald Trump said Wednesday the United States is in a trade war with China, warning of rising tensions between the two countries. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the world would have to decouple if China wants to be an unreliable partner.

Bessent emphasized that decoupling is not the goal, adding the administration wants to reduce risk and diversify rather than sever ties altogether.

Bessent said the administration plans to take up more control in strategic sectors to combat China’s export restrictions by taking more equity stakes in key companies.
