He noted that the United States is working with its Group of Seven partner nations to provide an alternative to doing business for China—especially for developing countries that are looking to grow their infrastructure.

China hosted a summit marking the project’s tenth anniversary earlier this month, where Beijing pledged to invest another $100 billion.

However, the far-reaching investment project has taken heavy criticism in the West with experts calling it a "debt trap" for developing nations.
