Billionaire businessman and climate activist Tom Steyer announced on Wednesday that he's running for California governor.

Steyer, 68, launched his campaign in <a href="https://x.com/TomSteyer/status/1991145045337284945?s=20">video</a> on social media, vowing to build more affordable housing and lower energy prices in the world's fifth-largest economy.

"Californians deserve a life they can afford, but the Californians who make this state run are being run over by the cost of living," he said in the video.

In 2020, Steyer ran for the Democratic presidential nomination but ultimately suspended his campaign. The failed presidential candidate spent more than $200 million of his fortune and received no pledged delegates.

Steyer later led a grassroots campaign to impeach President Donald Trump during his first term. He also founded NextGen, the largest youth voter engagement organization in U.S. history.

According to Steyer, California needs to "get back to basics."

His platform includes making sure corporations "pay their fair share" and banning corporate PAC money from state elections so that government serves the people instead of special interests.

The San Francisco resident also wants to put money into public schools to make California a "top ten" state for education.

Fifteen years ago, Steyer said that he walked away from his billion-dollar hedge fund business, Farallon Capital Management, to dedicate his life to public service and give back to California.

According to his website, he was among the first to sign The Giving Pledge—a commitment to give away the vast majority of his money during his lifetime.

Steyer also said he has the record to back up his campaign promises.

"He led ballot proposition campaigns to defeat Big Oil on climate, closed a corporate tax loophole for out-of-state companies, and took on Big Tobacco to raise the cigarette tax," his <a href="https://www.tomsteyer.com/">campaign website</a> states. "Steyer raised billions of dollars for California’s healthcare and public schools – without Californians having to pay a cent."

In 2016, Steyer successfully drove the campaign that led to a $2 per-pack tax hike on tobacco products. That money was applied to state health care programs, including tobacco-prevention efforts. In 2010, he served as a major opponent of a ballot initiative that would have rolled back California’s clean air and climate law.

More recently, Steyer committed $12 million to <a href="https://x.com/TomSteyer/status/1986138998734049301?s=20">Proposition 50</a>, a ballot initiative that allows California Democrats to redraw the state’s congressional map in the party’s favor. The measure, backed by Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom, was successful and passed earlier this month.

Newsom's tenure as governor is set to end in January 2027 because he's limited to serving two terms in office.

Steyer joins a growing field of gubernatorial candidates looking to replace Newsom.

The Democratic candidates include Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.), former federal Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and political commentator Steve Hilton have officially launched their campaigns.
