Trump Calls Iran's Response to Latest US Ceasefire Proposal 'Totally Unacceptable'

The bodies of two Israeli-American hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 were recovered from southern Gaza during a military operation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the remains of Judith Weinstein and Gad Haggai were recovered and returned to Israel in a special operation by the Israeli army and the Shin Bet internal security agency.

“Together with all the citizens of Israel, my wife and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the dear families. Our hearts ache for the most terrible loss. May their memory be blessed,” he said in a statement.

The prime minister thanked the soldiers and commanders involved in the operation and vowed to return all remaining hostages held in Gaza.

“We will not rest and we will not be silent until all our hostages–both the living and the fallen–are brought home,” he said.

The couple had four children and seven grandchildren.

Weinstein was born in New York and taught English to children with special needs at Kibbutz Nir Oz, a small community near the Gaza border. The kibbutz said she also taught meditation techniques to children and teenagers who suffered from anxiety as a result of rocket fire from Gaza. Haggai was a retired chef and jazz musician.

“My beautiful parents have been freed. We have certainty,” their daughter, Iris Haggai Liniado, wrote in a Facebook post. She thanked the Israeli military, the FBI, and the Israeli and U.S. governments and called for the release of all the remaining hostages.

In a statement the Kibbutz remembered Gadi as “a sharp-minded man, a gifted wind instrument player since the age of three, deeply connected to the land, a chef and advocate of healthy vegan nutrition and sports,” and Judih as “a poet, entrepreneur, creative spirit, and devoted advocate for peace and coexistence.”
<h2>Ceasefire Talks Deadlocked</h2>
The United States, Egypt, and Qatar have been trying to broker another ceasefire and hostage release, but the talks appear to be deadlocked.

Hamas says it will only release the remaining hostages in return for more Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. It has offered to hand over power to a politically independent Palestinian committee.

President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East has dismissed the Hamas response as “totally unacceptable” and a step backward in efforts to end the war.

The proposed agreement comes after a previous temporary truce collapsed in March. Since then, Israel has renewed its ground and air operations across the Gaza Strip, and aid access has been restricted, with Israel accusing Hamas of stealing the aid and selling it to fund its military operations.

The war began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists launched a surprise cross-border attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and abducting 251 hostages. About half of those hostages have been released in previous deals or cease-fires, while others were rescued or confirmed dead. Israeli officials say 58 remain in Gaza, with about a third believed to be alive.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023—figures that have not been independently verified and do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
