A United Airlines flight bound for New Jersey returned to Los Angeles International Airport on Monday morning after a suspected engine fire prompted an emergency evacuation on the runway.

United Flight 2127 departed Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 10:43 a.m. PT but turned back less than an hour later after a possible issue involving one of the aircraft’s engines. The plane landed safely at approximately 11:19 a.m. PT, according to flight-tracking data from <a href="https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL2127/history/20260302/1825Z/KLAX/KLAX">FlightAware</a>.

The jet began turning back toward Southern California shortly after 11 a.m. PT, about 17 minutes after takeoff. The aircraft completed a wide loop over the Pacific Ocean before returning to LAX, where it was immediately evacuated.

During the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily halted departures at the airport, while the aircraft returned and emergency crews responded. The Los Angeles Fire Department said the situation was brought under control roughly an hour after the plane landed, and officials reported no injuries.

“LAFD crews have confirmed United flight #2127 has landed safely and is clear of all passengers and crew members following reported engine problems. No patients requiring hospital transport have been identified at this time,” a statement from the department’s website read.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a long-haul jet commonly used on domestic and international routes. United said the flight had been scheduled to travel from Los Angeles to Newark Liberty International Airport.

<a href="https://x.com/Storyful/status/2028934824874954898">Video footage</a> circulating on social media appeared to show smoke coming from the plane’s left engine as the aircraft sat on a taxiway. Passengers can be seen exiting the aircraft using emergency slides and airstairs and gathering on the tarmac nearby.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, emergency personnel assisted with the evacuation of more than 250 passengers and crew members from the aircraft after it stopped on the taxiway. United said travelers were transported back to the terminal following the evacuation.

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported that a replacement aircraft later departed for Newark at about 6:30 p.m. local time, roughly eight hours after the original flight’s scheduled departure.

In 2019, an Aeroflot aircraft caught fire while landing in Moscow, killing 41 of the 78 people onboard. Aviation analysts later noted that some passengers retrieving luggage during the evacuation slowed the exit of others from the aircraft.
