United States Border Patrol agents have uncovered a massive narcotics smuggling tunnel at the southern border connecting Tijuana to San Diego.

The highly sophisticated tunnel ran under a portion of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, extended about 1,000 feet into the United States, and appeared to be under active construction, according to authorities on Thursday.

A <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/san-diego-sector-border-patrol-uncovers-sophisticated-cross-border">news release</a> stated that Border Patrol agents assigned to the San Diego Sector Tunnel Team initially discovered the tunnel in early April.

Earlier this week on June 16, Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and Mexican government authorities worked to locate the origin point of the tunnel.

Their investigation eventually led them to a residence in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood, where Mexican authorities served a warrant and later found the tunnel's entrance was concealed by freshly laid tile.

The tunnel's projected exit was found to be near a commercial warehouse space.

The underground passage was equipped with electrical wiring, lighting, ventilation systems, and a track system designed for transporting large amounts of contraband.

There were also makeshift barricades designed to "impede agents from southbound progress and the eventual identification of the tunnel’s origin," authorities said.

Jeffrey Stalnaker, acting chief patrol agent of the San Diego sector, said in a statement that agents placed their lives in danger in order to uncover and dismantle the underground operation before it was up and running.

"As we continue to strengthen the nation’s air, and maritime border security, it’s not surprising that foreign terrorist organizations would resort to underground routes,” Stalker said. “Disruption of narcotics smuggling tunnels is critical to protecting American lives."

The tunnel reached depths of around 50 feet underground at its deepest point and measured 2,918 feet long, 42 inches tall, and 28 inches wide.

Moving forward, thousands of gallons of concrete will be poured into the tunnel to prevent it from being used again.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, more than 95 tunnels have been discovered and decommissioned in the San Diego area since 1993.

Meanwhile, construction is underway to close gaps in the border wall in San Diego County. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/dhs-issues-waiver-expedite-new-border-wall-construction-california">waiver</a> to expedite the process to build 2.5 miles of new border barrier in the area. This includes approximately 2.1 miles of wall west of the Jacumba Hot Springs area in southeastern San Diego County and the construction of 0.4 miles of new border wall east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The DHS waiver was issued to bypass environmental laws that would have stalled construction of a new barrier for months and possibly years, the agency said.

DHS said the projects will close critical gaps in the border barrier and enhance border security operations in the San Diego Sector.

According to DHS, Border Patrol in San Diego apprehended more than 324,000 illegal immigrants attempting to enter the country in fiscal year 2024. Agents seized over 120 pounds of marijuana, 2,860 pounds of cocaine, and more than 60 pounds of heroin in that same time period.

The administration has stepped up immigration enforcement across the nation, targeting criminal illegal immigrants in what President Donald Trump has vowed to be the largest deportation effort in U.S. history.

Trump's sweeping immigration policies triggered nationwide protests earlier this month, prompting the president to deploy National Guard troops and the Marines to protect federal buildings.
