A Massachusetts man has been convicted of killing his wife nearly three years after she vanished from their home on New Year's Day. Ana Walshe, a 39-year-old immigrant from Serbia, disappeared early on Jan. 1, 2023, after celebrating New Year's Eve with her husband, Brian Walshe, and a family friend.

The guilty verdict came as Walshe stared straight ahead in the courtroom, showing no visible reaction. He was immediately handcuffed and shackled before being led away.

Walshe was found guilty of first-degree murder after he had previously pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of misleading police and illegally disposing of his wife's body. Despite confessing to dismembering Ana Walshe's body and throwing it in a dumpster, her remains have never been found.

The case against Walshe relied heavily on digital evidence. Prosecutors proved that devices connected to Walshe contained searches for disturbing information, including "dismemberment and best ways to dispose of a body," "how long before a body starts to smell," and "hacksaw best tool to dismember.”

When police first questioned Walshe, he claimed his wife had been called to Washington, D.C., on New Year's Day for an urgent work matter. However, witnesses testified there was no evidence she used a ride service to get to the airport or boarded any flight.

Walshe didn't contact his wife's employer until Jan. 4 to report her missing. The company was actually the <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/man-accused-of-killing-wife-sentenced-in-separate-case-involving-sale-of-fake-andy-warhol-paintings-5592004">first to notify</a> police that Ana Walshe was missing, and they said there had been no work emergency requiring her immediate return.

Ana Walshe worked for an international property management company in Washington and split her time between the nation's capital and the family's home in Cohasset, an upscale coastal town about 15 miles southeast of Boston.

Walshe's defense team presented no witnesses during the trial. His lawyers had argued that he found his wife dead in bed and panicked, leading him to dispose of her body.

The circumstances surrounding Ana Walshe's death have troubled investigators from the start. Surveillance video from Jan. 3 showed a man resembling Walshe throwing what appeared to be heavy trash bags into a dumpster at an apartment complex in Abington, not far from Cohasset. Police <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/husband-of-missing-massachusetts-woman-faces-murder-charge-4992054">also found</a> a broken knife and blood in the basement of the couple's home, though they did not identify whose blood it was.

Additional suspicions arose from Ana Walshe's life insurance policy. She had taken out a $2.7 million policy naming her husband as the sole beneficiary.

Before the murder conviction, Walshe had already been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for an unrelated fraud scheme. He had sold two fake Andy Warhol paintings to a buyer for $80,000 in 2016 and was ordered to pay $475,000 in restitution.

The couple's three young children were placed in state custody.
