Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, has agreed to plead guilty as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty, according to an attorney for one of the victims’ families and a letter from prosecutors.

The agreement will see Kohberger, 30, sentenced to life in prison over the stabbing deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen at a rental home near campus in Moscow, Idaho, early on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed the four were all likely asleep when they were attacked, some had defensive wounds, and each was stabbed multiple times.

The decision sparked outrage among the victims’ families on Monday.  The sudden introduction of a plea deal just weeks before the scheduled trial has compounded their distress, which has drawn out since the murders occurred.

“We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho,” <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GoncalvesFamilyTips/posts/709684578698208">wrote</a> the Goncalves family on Facebook of the plea deal. “They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected.”

Aubrie Goncalves, the youngest member of the family, shared her thoughts in another <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GoncalvesFamilyTips/posts/709750898691576">statement</a> posted on Facebook.

"What the families of Ethan, Kaylee, Maddie, and Xana have endured over the past 2 year and a half is beyond comprehension. From the constant delays to the relocation of proceedings—making it harder for loved ones to attend—the justice system has placed heavy burdens on those already carrying unimaginable grief," she said.

"Through it all, we have tried to hold on to hope. We’ve believed in the process. We’ve had faith in the system. But at this point, it is impossible not to acknowledge the truth: the system has failed these four innocent victims and their families."

According to Shanon Gray, the attorney representing the Goncalves family, prosecutors informed the families of the plea agreement by email and letter on Monday.

The agreement would see Kohberger plead guilty to the murders and receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Kohberger’s trial was scheduled to begin in August in Boise, after being moved from northern Idaho due to pretrial publicity. A change of plea hearing is set for Wednesday, but the Goncalves family has requested a delay to allow more time for them to travel to Boise, Gray said.

<h2>Prosecutors Cite Justice, Certainty</h2>
In a letter to families, obtained by ABC News, prosecutors stated that Kohberger’s lawyers approached them seeking to reach a plea deal. The defense team had previously made unsuccessful efforts to have the death penalty stricken as a possible punishment, including arguing that Kohberger’s autism diagnosis made him less culpable.

The prosecutors said they met with available family members last week before deciding to extend an offer to Kohberger.

“This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family,” the letter said. “This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice.”
<h2>DNA Match</h2>
Kohberger, a former criminal justice graduate student at Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania weeks after the murders.

Investigators matched his DNA to genetic material found on a knife sheath at the scene. Surveillance footage and cellphone data indicated Kohberger had visited the victims’ neighborhood multiple times before the attack.

No motive has been identified, and it remains unclear why two roommates in the house were spared.
