The city of Santa Clara has filed a lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of profiting from scam ads on Facebook & Instagram. The lawsuit, filed on May 11 in the California Superior Court claims Meta violated the state’s false advertising and unfair competition laws.

County officials claim Meta knowingly allowed fraudulent ads to spread because they generated billions of dollars in revenue. The lawsuit cites internal documents first reported by Reuters. According to the complaint, Meta made up to $7 billion dollars a year from what it called “high-risk” ads that showed clear signs of fraud.
