A major change to how Californians vote could be coming in the form of a requirement to present ID showing citizenship when voting. State officials with the California Department of State have said the measure is now headed to the November ballot.

Currently, most California voters don’t have to show ID—they just state their name, address, and sign before casting a ballot.

Under current law, voters also attest under penalty of perjury that they are U.S. citizens when they register.

But this proposed measure would add new requirements, like showing a government-issued ID in person, or providing part of an ID number when voting by mail.

It would also require election officials to verify voters’ citizenship and track how many verifications have taken place each year.

California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton told Fox News on April 29 that the voter ID proposal could increase GOP turnout in the California governor’s race.

“We've got a big advantage this year, which is we’ve got, in California, Voter ID on the ballot. Republicans really support that, so I think that’s going to help us get a big turnout in November,” Hilton said.
