A campus security officer at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell has been fired after he posted inappropriate comments on Facebook regarding the recent assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

According to university officials, Oswaldo Vazquez Nava is no longer employed at the institution after making what administrators described as a negative social media post. University President Dr. Shawn Powell addressed the situation in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1537273314111867">public statement</a> released yesterday.

"Earlier today, it came to our attention that a former employee made a negative post on social media," Powell said. "This individual is no longer with our campus, and I want to assure you that the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority, as we want to make sure that the learning environment and learning community is safe on campus."

According to screenshots <a href="https://x.com/ScottPresler/status/1967838378277343568">shared</a> by users on social media platform X, Vazquez Nava's Facebook post read: "I woke up today and guess who didn't??? Charlie Kirk lol." The post appeared to mock Kirk's death, which happened Sept. 10 during an assassination at Utah Valley University.

The controversial post gained widespread attention after Republican activist Scott Pressler <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ScottRyanPresler/posts/pfbid0bNPYzBJHNgC8madtJHUxp4zfdLVdziYaMZpAYbHeoPnA9rmMeWF6LNecBXNrYExRl?rdid=40AKD8zs8Kwd2Djx">shared</a> screenshots on Facebook, bringing the matter to the public’s attention. According to Pressler, he questioned how someone celebrating Kirk's assassination could continue serving in a security role responsible for protecting lives.

"Meet Oswaldo Vazquez Nava. He's a campus security officer at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell. How can anyone that celebrates Charlie Kirk's assassination continue to serve as a security officer in charge of protecting lives?" Pressler wrote.

Powell acknowledged public concern over the incident and encouraged continued communication from community members.

"I appreciate the comments and concerns that have been brought forward regarding this matter. And if you have further comments, please send them to me via my email <a href="mailto:shawn.powell@enmu.edu">shawn.powell@enmu.edu</a>," Powell stated.

The termination follows a broader pattern of employment consequences following Kirk's death. Numerous individuals across various sectors have faced job-related repercussions for social media posts about the conservative activist's assassination.

The <a href="https://www.ntd.com/tv-anchor-resigns-after-suspension-for-airing-charlie-kirk-tribute_1090982.html">employment fallout</a> has extended beyond educational institutions. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that multiple American Airlines pilots were immediately removed from service, while Delta Airlines employees faced suspension pending investigation.

"This behavior is disgusting, and they should be fired," Duffy reportedly wrote regarding the American Airlines situation. "Any company responsible for the safety of the traveling public cannot tolerate that behavior."

Educational institutions nationwide have implemented similar disciplinary measures. Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas announced investigations into educators who celebrated Kirk's death, while multiple universities terminated or suspended faculty members for inappropriate social media comments.

"I commend Superintendent Broskie @oneclayschools for taking swift action to suspend a teacher who despicably celebrated the death of Charlie Kirk," Kamoutsas <a href="https://x.com/StasiKamoutsas/status/1966188802038272161">wrote on X.</a>

Federal agencies have also responded to employee misconduct related to Kirk's death. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi announced that the agency placed agent Anthony Pough on leave after posting comments questioning those mourning Kirk's death.

"The U.S. Secret Service will not tolerate behavior that violates our code of conduct," Guglielmi stated.

The incident has also affected media professionals. Local ABC affiliate TV anchor Beni Rae Harmony resigned from WICS-ABC20 in Springfield, Illinois, on Monday after being suspended for broadcasting what she described as a non-partisan tribute to Kirk.

Harmony announced her departure via X, stating she believed she was the first mainstream media figure to face consequences for honoring Kirk rather than mocking his death.

"Many in the mainstream media have been fired or punished for mocking his assassination. I believe I am the first to be targeted for honoring him on air," Harmony wrote.
