An illegal immigrant was taken into custody after an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was shot in the face in a Manhattan park on Saturday night, police said.

The 42-year-old officer was in stable condition on Sunday and expected to survive. There was no indication that he was targeted because of his employment, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

The officer, who was not in uniform, had been sitting with a woman in a park beneath the George Washington Bridge when two men approached on a moped just before midnight. The passenger got off and approached the officer, who realized he was being robbed and drew his service weapon, Tisch said.

The two exchanged gunfire and the off-duty officer was shot in the face and arm. The perpetrator was injured before he and the moped driver rode off, police said.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1946992590496100624">released surveillance footage</a> of the two assailants involved in the "ambushing and shooting" of the CBP officer before leaving the scene.

A person of interest, Miguel Mora, an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic, has since been captured. It is unknown if Mora has an attorney.

Two years ago, Mora was apprehended at the southern border in San Luis, Arizona, but released, according to DHS.

DHS Secretary Kristi <a href="https://x.com/Sec_Noem/status/1947014656872083864">Noem said on X</a> that the previously deported Mora had a kidnapping warrant out of Massachusetts and prior felony arrests.

The police commissioner said Mora’s injuries were consistent with what was seen on surveillance video of the shooting shared by the DHS.

The search for his alleged accomplice continued on Sunday. NTD reached out to DHS for additional details on the investigation.

The footage released by DHS captured the moment the suspect approached the officer from behind while the other suspect on a motorcycle or motorized scooter stood nearby and watched. After the suspect shot the officer, the latter drew his weapon and fired at the suspect, the video shows.

President Donald Trump commended the officer for fighting back against the shooter.

"The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage," Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114887221069099658">wrote on Truth Social.</a>

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott also praised the off-duty officer for springing into action.

"Our CBP Officer in NYC showed extraordinary courage last night—shot in the face by an illegal alien & still fought back to help bring his attacker into custody," Scott <a href="https://x.com/CBPCommissioner/status/1947033381440827453">wrote on X.</a> "This violent criminal never should’ve been on our streets. This is exactly why we fight every day to secure this nation. We’re praying for the officer & his family."

The case continues, with the New York Police Department investigating the incident, according to DHS.

The Trump administration has arrested and deported thousands of criminal illegal immigrants across the country in its nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration.

DHS has highlighted the dangers that federal agents have faced during their enforcement of Trump's directive.

Assaults against federal officers and agents have risen nearly 700 percent, <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1944873028250214816">according to Noem</a>, who said that people are attempting to reveal the identities of federal agents to target them and their families with threats and intimidation.
