CBS News on Sunday night scrapped a "60 Minutes" segment featuring the controversial CECOT prison in El Salvador used to hold Venezuelan gang members deported by the Trump administration.

The show notified the public of the change just a few hours before the segment was set to air.

“The broadcast lineup for tonight’s edition of 60 Minutes has been updated,” the show said in an <a href="https://x.com/60Minutes/status/2002854497685582309?s=20">editor’s note</a> on social media. “Our report ‘Inside CECOT’ will air in a future broadcast.”

Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi criticized the decision to postpone her segment in an internal email sent to some colleagues and obtained by The Associated Press. Alfonsi said she learned on Saturday that editor-in-chief Bari Weiss had decided not to air it. But Alfonsi argued that the segment was factually correct and cleared by CBS attorneys and news standards officials.

“In my view, pulling it now—after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one,” Alfonsi said.

The story was supposed to provide viewers with an inside look at CECOT, which stands for Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, a strict megaprison where visitation, recreation, and education are not allowed. President Donald Trump had struck a deal with El Salvador to use the prison to deport illegal immigrants suspected by the United States of being members of terrorist groups, such as the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.

Weiss said in a statement to media outlets: “My job is to make sure that all the stories we publish are the best they can be. Holding stories that aren’t ready for whatever reason—that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices—happens every day in every newsroom.”

She said she looked forward to airing Alfonsi’s piece “when it’s ready.”

NTD reached out to CBS and Department of Homeland Security but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Trump has been highly critical of the show, suing the network over how 60 Minutes handled its interview last fall with former Vice President Kamala Harris, his opponent in the 2024 presidential election. Trump argued that the network was protecting Harris by editing a pre-election interview with her in a misleading manner.

CBS had aired two versions of the interview in which Harris appeared to give different answers to the same question about the Israel–Hamas war.

Paramount, CBS News’ parent company, ultimately settled with Trump for $16 million.
