Commonly known as "kissing bug" disease, Chagas has been found in an increasing number of states in the southern United States, which has caused enough concern at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to release a <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/31/9/24-1700_article">report</a> this week to encourage health officials to prepare for its spread.

While it had been nonendemic in recent years, the CDC says evidence points to Chagas reaching endemic status in the United States.

Chagas disease, caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) parasite carried by blood-sucking insects or "kissing bugs," has spread to enough states, particularly in Texas. It is already endemic in 21 countries in the Americas, with more Chagas cases being reported in humans, as well as domestic animals and wildlife.

With increasing evidence of T. cruzi parasites being found, via reports of the illness in 32 states so far, the CDC said the parasite can lead to severe fatigue in early stages, and potentially serious heart and digestive problems in later stages of the disease. Without treatment, death can occur, the report states.

The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/chagas/about/index.html">CDC explains</a> that after kissing bugs suck blood from infected animals or people, the insects can pass the T. cruzi parasite in their droppings. Infection can occur if the droppings enter the body through the skin or near the eyes or mouth.
<h2>Lone Star State Cases</h2>
In the United States, for instance, in Texas, where most of the Chagas cases have been reported, 273 human cases have been reported between 2013 and 2023, according to a <a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/notifiable-conditions/zoonosis-control/zoonosis-control-diseases-and-conditions/chagas-disease/chagas-disease-data">report</a> from the Texas Health and Human Services department. Most of the human cases were in Harris County (Houston); Bexar County (San Antonio); Dallas County (Dallas); Travis County (Austin); Hidalgo County (McAllen), and Nueces County (Corpus Christi). The overwhelming number of cases, geographically speaking, were in the southern portions of the Lone Star State.

And the animal cases were highest in Travis County (Austin); Bee County (Beeville); and Medina County (Hondo). This included 431 dogs, two cats, three chimpanzees, one rat, and one walrus. The statistics, however, were only reported between 2013 and 2015.

The CDC report suggests that "labeling the United States as non–Chagas disease–endemic perpetuates low awareness and underreporting. Classification of Chagas disease as endemic, in particular as hypoendemic, to the United States could improve surveillance, research, and public health responses. Acknowledging the endemicity of Chagas disease in the United States is crucial for achieving global health goals."
