Chinese citizens will soon be allowed to leave the country again after Beijing has kept borders tightly closed for nearly 3 years.

The change comes as an unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak sweeps through the country and more than 200 million have been infected, according to a leaked document from Chinese authorities.

China's State Council said that starting Jan. 8, 2023, Chinese residents will be able travel outside China.

Flight tickets out of the country have seen a massive spike since the news broke, according to data from travel company Trip.com group.
