The United States sentenced Chinese citizen Jingliang “James” Su to 46 months for his role in a digital crime ring that scammed 174 Americans, prosecutors <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/chinese-national-sentenced-prison-role-crypto-scam-targeting-americans">announced</a> on Jan. 27.

Su pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal money transmitting business last year, and the court has ordered him to pay $26.8 million in restitution.

The other members allegedly include American and Chinese citizens living in California, Mexico, Cambodia, and China.

Conspirators would contact victims through social media, phone calls, text messages, and dating services and gain their trust, sometimes building remote romantic relationships, according to court documents, as is common practice in pig butchering scams.

They would then send victims links to fake cryptocurrency investment websites and direct any funds the victims would transfer to shell companies.

Su would receive a commission for every transfer he helped facilitate.
