The British Court handed a Chinese Ph.D. student a life sentence and ordered him to serve a minimum of 24 years in prison Thursday after being convicted of drugging and raping 10 women across England and China.

Zhenhao Zou, 28, who was pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering at University College London, used dating apps and WeChat to befriend fellow students of Chinese heritage.

He then invited them to his apartments in London or to locations in China, where he drugged and assaulted them.

Evidence <a href="https://www.ntd.com/chinese-student-found-guilty-in-british-court-of-drugging-and-raping-10-women_1052095.html">presented</a> at Inner London Crown Court in March revealed that Zou filmed nine of the attacks using hidden or handheld cameras, keeping the footage as "souvenirs" and collecting a "trophy box" of his victims’ belongings.

Judge Rosina Cottage, who presided over the four-week trial, described Zou as a “very bright young man” who wore a “charming mask” to conceal his predatory nature. In March, when Zou was found guilty, Cottage described him as a “dangerous and predatory sexual offender,” while noting the manipulative tactics he used to incapacitate his victims.

During the time of his conviction, a jury found Zou guilty of 11 counts of rape—three in London and seven in China—along with three counts of voyeurism, 10 counts of possessing an extreme pornographic image, one count of false imprisonment, and three counts of possessing a controlled drug with intent to commit a sexual offense, namely butanediol, after more than 19 hours of deliberation.

He was acquitted of two additional counts of possessing extreme pornographic images and one count of possessing MDMA with intent to commit a sexual offense.

Zou, who also used the name Pakho online, had said during the trial that all encounters were consensual. However, during their investigation police discovered videos of him raping unconscious women on his phone, as well as sedatives and recording equipment in his south London apartment.

The Metropolitan Police Service said the investigation into Zou’s crimes is ongoing. Publicity around the trial has led at least 24 more women to come forward with new allegations, and police warn that the number of victims could exceed 50, which would make Zou one of the worst sex offenders in UK history.

“He has done all that he can in these offenses to incapacitate his victims to the point where they could not resist his attack, and in many instances may not even remember what has occurred to them,” Metropolitan Police Commander Kevin Southworth said in March when Zou was convicted.

Southworth thanked the two women who testified against Zou, describing him as “particularly cowardly and deceitful,” and urged anyone who suspects they may have been targeted to contact authorities.

Prosecutor Saira Pike praised the victims’ resilience after the sentencing was dished out, stating: “They have been incredibly strong and brave. There is no doubt that their evidence helped us to secure his conviction, and the life sentence handed to him today”.

Zou moved to Belfast in 2017 to study at Queen’s University before transferring to University College London in 2019 for postgraduate studies.
