Fear of Melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – leads many people to avoid the sun. But could this be to our own peril? A Swedish study shows a surprising relationship between sun-avoiding behavior and early death.

This special ‘sun exposé’ looks at everything from choosing sunblock and stopping melanoma to curbing depression and aligning our body clocks to nature.

Internal medicine and sleep specialist Dr. Robert Seheult says dementia and diabetes have increased as people spend less time in the sun. Psychiatrist Dr. Jingduan Yang says inpatients with depression show signs of faster recovery when they sleep on the ‘sunny side’ of the bed.

Traditional Chinese medicine highlights the connection between the human body and nature. The body’s circadian rhythm is like an internal sun inside of us, says Dr Yang. Is it surprising that most of his patients with mental illness also have low vitamin D levels?
