New York Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa said Tuesday he won’t cave into pressure to drop out of the race.

Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, pledged not to quit under any circumstances, despite growing calls for him to end his campaign.

“We will never surrender,” Sliwa said in a <a href="https://x.com/CurtisSliwa/status/1980449692577362149">video statement on X</a>. “They’re not just trying to push me out, they’re trying to silence YOU. The people who’ve had enough. The people who feel pushed out, unsafe, and ignored for years.”

He added, “For years, politicians turned their backs on you, they disparaged us, and now they are begging for your vote. We won’t be fooled. I’ve fought alongside you every step of the way to make this city better. As mayor, I won’t be controlled. I’ll fight for you, always. That’s what threatens them.”

He also urged supporters to donate to his campaign ahead of the final fundraising deadline.

Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman, has enjoyed a strong lead after winning the Democratic primary in June.

Former New York governor and lifelong Democrat Andrew Cuomo lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary and is running as an independent.

A <a href="https://www.aarp.org/pri/topics/voter-research/politics/new-york-city-mayoral-poll-2025/">recent poll</a> shows that if Sliwa withdrew from the race, Mamdani’s lead would narrow from double to single digits.

Mamdani holds 43.2 percent support, followed by Cuomo at 28.9 percent, according to the AARP and Gotham Polling & Analytics ' survey. Sliwa stands at 19.4 percent, while 8.4 percent are undecided or prefer another candidate.

But in a head-to-head matchup between Mamdani and Cuomo, Mamdani’s lead falls to 4 percent, within the margin of error, with the vast majority of undecided voters age 50 or older,<a href="https://www.aarp.org/pri/topics/voter-research/politics/new-york-city-mayoral-poll-2025/"> according to the poll. </a>

The gap would then give Cuomo the best possible chance at a path to victory, a scenario that has prompted Republicans and moderate Democrats to push Sliwa to drop out.

Cuomo warned during a <a href="https://wabcradio.com/episode/andrew-cuomo-candidate-mayor-of-new-york-city-10-21-25/">Sid Rosenberg podcast</a> on Tuesday that “a vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani.” The former New York governor also suggested he was open to offering Sliwa a job in his administration if he dropped out of the race.

“That would be something that I would be interested in,” Cuomo told Rosenberg. “We need a coalition to run this city. We need New Yorkers to come together.”

President Donald Trump said he’d prefer Cuomo to win the race.

“I would rather have a Democrat over a communist,” <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-warns-rather-have-democrat-than-communist-nyc-mayoral-race-enters-homestretch">Trump told reporters</a> on Tuesday, referring to Mamdani and his democratic socialist policies.

Mamdani has largely campaigned on lowering costs for everyday New Yorkers. According to his campaign website, he believes in free childcare, rent freezes, and “fast, fare-free buses.”

The president acknowledged that if Sliwa dropped out, Cuomo would have a better chance. But Mamdani’s lead is big enough so even that scenario wouldn’t be good enough based on the latest polls, Trump said.

“Well, I looked at the polls, and it looks like we’re going to have a communist as the mayor of New York," the president said. “Very interesting. But here’s the good news: he’s gotta go through the White House. Everything goes through the White House. At least this White House does. And we’ll have to see what happens.”

The three contenders will make their final pitch to voters in a debate on Wednesday.

Early voting in the mayor's race starts on Saturday. The election will be held on Nov. 4.
