Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, 24, was found dead early Thursday in Frisco, Texas, after a police chase that ended in a crash and subsequent foot pursuit, <a href="https://x.com/FriscoPD/status/1986470499551953289">according t</a>o authorities.

According to the Frisco Police Department, Marshawn Kneeland was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a multi-agency search. The incident began around 10:39 p.m. Wednesday, when Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop a vehicle that evaded them and entered Frisco.

After briefly losing sight of the vehicle, troopers found it crashed minutes later on the southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. Police said the driver, later identified as Kneeland of Plano, Texas, fled the scene on foot. Officers set up a perimeter and deployed K-9 and drone units to search the area.

“During the course of the search, officers received information that Kneeland had expressed suicidal ideations,” police said in a <a href="https://x.com/FriscoPD/status/1986470499551953289">statement</a>. He was found dead at 1:31 a.m. with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death, according to the police.

The Cowboys confirmed his death in a statement Thursday morning. “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team <a href="https://x.com/dallascowboys/status/1986455923024712162">said</a>. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Kneeland was in his second season with the Cowboys, having been selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan. Just days before his death, he recorded his first career touchdown by recovering a blocked punt during a 27–17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

“I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Kneeland's agent, Jonathan Perzley, said in a statement that asked for privacy. “Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words.”

Kneeland was a second-round draft pick in 2024. His rookie season was off to a promising start before he was sidelined for five games by a knee injury.

At Western Michigan, Kneeland excelled as a defensive end, setting numerous school records and earning both all-state and all-conference honors. He also competed in track and basketball. In his draft announcement, Kneeland expressed gratitude to his family and coaches, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C0PwX99PoVX/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">writing</a> that their guidance, “along with the unwavering support from my Nana and mother, has been instrumental in getting me through college.”
