President Donald Trump's federal takeover of the nation's capital has helped reduce crime, according to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday.

Bowser acknowledged crime has dropped, specifically citing fewer gun crimes and homicides. She also said there has been an "extreme reduction" in carjackings, which is down 87 percent.

"We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what [the Metropolitan Police Department] has been able to do in the city," she <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mThW9DafRC8">said</a>.

The nation's capital on Aug. 25 reached its 12th consecutive day with no homicides during Trump's takeover.

But the mayor also said the presence of masked immigration agents and the National Guard "isn't working."

While the change has resulted in lower crime, residents still live in fear, the mayor said.

"What we know is not working is a break in trust between police and community, especially with new federal partners in our community," Bowser said. "We know having masked ICE agents in the community has not worked, and national guard from other states has not been an efficient use of those resources.

The mayor said the city needs more police, judges, and more effective police programs, adding, "We need to ensure local control."

The mayor said she has been personally engaged with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on the federal surge.

"I was reminded of our first meeting after his reelection, where we discussed shared priorities of our district."

But other city leaders on Wednesday dismissed Trump's actions to federalize the city's police force and deploy National Guard troops to the city.

"We, as city leaders, should be unequivocal that the federal surge of officers in DC and deployment of national guardsmen on our streets are dangerous, unnecessary, and an affront to Home Rule," Zachary Parker, Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember, <a href="https://x.com/ZacharyforWard5/status/1960772250740908111">wrote on X</a>.

On Aug. 11, Trump announced that National Guard troops would be sent to Washington to tackle rising crime and placed the city's police department under direct federal control.

The mayor at that time maintained that the city's crime rate had plummeted.
<div>"Violent crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years," Bowser said in a <a href="https://x.com/MayorBowser/status/1955408828964671749" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on Aug. 12. "We had an unacceptable spike in 2023, so we changed our laws and strategies. Now, crime levels are not only down from 2023, but from before the pandemic. Our tactics are working, and we aren’t taking our foot off the gas."</div>
Moving forward, Bowser said local leaders will continue investing in residents and services that keep our city clean, safe, and beautiful, and we will continue to work with our federal partners.

Trump has signaled he's ready to use federal government resources, including active-duty military, to combat crime in other major cities, specifically naming New York and Chicago.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he is open to working with federal law enforcement, but added that the city continues to be the "safest big city" in the nation. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said his city doesn't need federal reinforcement, and Trump's action would violate the U.S. Constitution.
