Popular breakfast chain Denny's has become the latest restaurant to add a surcharge to some of its menu items to combat rising egg prices.

Denny's confirmed the added charge in an emailed statement to NTD.

"Denny’s remains committed to providing our guests with delicious meals they love at the value they expect," the company wrote. "We do our best to plan ahead with our vendors on items like eggs to minimize the impact market volatility has on our costs and menu pricing. However, due to the nationwide egg shortage and increased cost of eggs, some of our restaurant locations will need to temporarily add a surcharge to every meal that includes eggs."

The restaurant declined to offer details on the pricing, noting that it is a "fluid situation" and the surcharge amount depends on the market due to the regional impacts of the egg shortage.

Denny's also acknowledged that its customers value a good deal and reassured them that it continues to offer items at affordable prices.

"We understand our guests’ desire for value, and we will continue to look for ways to provide options on our menu, including our $2 $4 $6 $8 value menu, while navigating these rapidly changing market dynamics responsibly," the company said in a statement.

Restaurants and retailers have been forced to increase their prices due to the largest bird flu outbreak in a decade.

Earlier this month, popular diner chain <a href="https://www.ntd.com/waffle-house-adds-50-cent-surcharge-on-every-egg_1045604.html">Waffle House</a> added a 50-cent surcharge for every egg in a customer's order.

“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the company said.

<a href="https://www.ntd.com/as-egg-prices-continue-to-soar-grocers-like-trader-joes-limit-how-many-cartons-customers-can-buy_1046993.html">Trader Joe’s</a> is capping purchases to one carton of eggs per customer each day.

"We hope these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe’s,” the company said in a statement.

The latest monthly <a href="https://apnews.com/article/egg-prices-record-bird-flu-a2394bdefc7bd0514d4f003cc5e8a908">consumer price index</a> shows that the average price of a dozen Grade A eggs in U.S. cities reached $4.95 in January. Egg prices in January 2025 were 53 percent higher than in January 2024 and surpassed the previous peak prices in January 2023, <a href="https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_3725.pdf">according</a> to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

There are no signs of relief, the USDA says, predicting that egg prices could increase by 41.1 percent in 2025. That's because the bird flu continues to impact productive flocks with “little chance for improvement” in the near future.

There have been reports of egg shortages at some grocery stores. Experts say that consumer “panic buying” could also contribute to the shortage.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump recently said that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is working to combat egg prices, adding that his administration “inherited all the problems” from the previous administration.

Rollins <a href="https://x.com/SecRollins/status/1894111868790477231">announced</a> that more information on combating egg prices is expected mid-week.
