Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/08/14/secretary-noem-announces-16-million-illegal-aliens-have-left-us#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%94%20Today%2C%20Department%20of%20Homeland,million%20illegalaliens%20across%20the%20country.">announced</a> that an estimated 1.6 million illegal aliens have left the United States in 2025.

Both Noem and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted the statistic on the <a href="https://x.com/Sec_Noem/status/1956006589518737448">X </a>social media platform. The stat itself comes from a <a href="https://cis.org/Report/Overall-ForeignBorn-Population-Down-22-Million-January-July">report</a> by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The report indicates that the Trump administration's enforcement policies have led to this decline, but includes several caveats that the data is not complete and may be tainted by false or missing responses.

"In less than 200 days, 1.6 MILLION illegal immigrants have left the United States population," Noem <a href="https://x.com/Sec_Noem/status/1956006589518737448">wrote on X</a>. "This is massive. This means safer streets, taxpayer savings, pressure off of schools and hospital services and better job opportunities for Americans. Thank you @POTUS Trump!"

<a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1956012180542816546">DHS</a> followed up on Noem's post with a post of its own reiterating that data point.

The <a href="https://cis.org/Report/Overall-ForeignBorn-Population-Down-22-Million-January-July">CIS</a> report analyzed raw data from the Current Population Survey, a survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which showed an "unprecedented" decline in the total foreign-born population of 2.2 million, including a decline in the illegal alien population of 1.6 million. CIS hypothesized that the decrease was due to out-migration resulting from stepped-up immigration law enforcement.

The report found that after a consistent trend of increasing for the past four years, the number of foreign-born residents of the United States dropped from 53.312 million in January to 51.086 million in July. That is the largest 6-month decline in the same year since the survey began asking respondents their citizenship status in January 1994. The decline was entirely among non-citizen residents: the number of non-citizens dropped by 2.6 million, while the number of naturalized citizens ticked up 373,000.

"Since illegal immigrants are not citizens, the decline in the number of people who are not American citizens is consistent with what would be expected if the number of illegal immigrants fell," CIS noted.

Narrowing the data down to a more relevant demographic—immigrants from Latin America from 1980 to the present, the report noted that the population declined by 1.6 million between January and July, and by 2 million from December 2024 through July.

"These results strongly support the idea that the election of Donald Trump, his rhetoric, high-profile enforcement actions, and border policies have caused a large number of illegal immigrants to leave the country and many fewer to enter," CIS said.

Finally, narrowing down to just the illegal immigrant population, the report estimated an illegal immigrant population of 14.2 million, down from 15.8 million in January.

However, the report included several important caveats. First, the estimate is based on trends, since the underlying data needed to estimate the legal immigrant population is not complete. Second, CIS analyzed that increased immigration enforcement may have led some immigrants to claim they were born in the United States; though declines in the unweighted data led CIS to conclude that was unlikely. Third, CIS noted that it is possible that the analysis may have overstated the actual decline in illegal population, as illegal immigrants may have become reluctant to answer the Current Population Survey due to the increased enforcement.

DHS did provide some hard data on deportations. According to an X post by the department on Aug. 14, more than <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1956026343671345230">352,000</a> illegal aliens have been arrested, and 324,000 have been deported.
