Federal law enforcement surged into Minneapolis early on Tuesday as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a high-profile arrest and issued a direct warning to criminals that they will be targeted. The operation comes as Minnesota faces mounting national scrutiny over immigration enforcement and widespread allegations of fraud in social services programs.

“GOOD MORNING MINNEAPOLIS!” the DHS <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2008543534086029591?s=20">posted</a> on X at 9:17 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

The surge dramatically expands the federal law enforcement footprint in Minnesota. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd Lyons, during an interview with Newsmax, called the crackdown the agency's “largest immigration operation ever.”

In a follow-up post, the DHS said that murderers have no home in Minneapolis, adding that ICE agents arrested Tomas Espin Tapia, <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2008552276613353655?s=20">described</a> as “an Ecuadorian illegal alien convicted of robbery and WANTED for MURDER and SEXUAL ASSAULT.” The agency also sent a warning: “To the criminals living among us, you are NOT our neighbors. Leave now or we will find you.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, appearing in a video at the scene, confirmed the arrest. In a post on X, Noem wrote: “Another murderer and sexual predator off of Minneapolis’s streets thanks to @ICEgov,” and stated that the suspect had “an active warrant for murder and sexual assault in Ecuador and a warrant for sexual assault in Connecticut,” as well as prior convictions for “robbery and extortion in Ecuador.”

The immigration enforcement action comes amid widespread allegations of fraud and ongoing investigative activity in Minnesota. On <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2005688262695018606?s=20">Dec. 29</a>, federal authorities announced a major enforcement presence in Minneapolis, saying Homeland Security agents were actively investigating suspected fraud and were on the ground, going door to door at suspected fraud sites.

The Department said that “the American people deserve answers on how their taxpayer money is being used and ARRESTS when abuse is found.” Noem also confirmed the operation, writing in a <a href="https://x.com/Sec_Noem/status/2005686960984293711?s=20">post</a> on X that “Homeland Security Investigations @ICEGov are on the ground in Minneapolis right now conducting a massive investigation on childcare and other rampant fraud.” Noem added that there would be “more coming.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz <a href="https://www.ntd.com/minnesota-gov-tim-walz-ends-bid-for-reelection_1117448.html">announced</a> on Sunday that he would not seek reelection amid the fraud investigations and allegations, citing the need to focus on governing rather than campaigning.

Walz said, “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity.”

The House Oversight Committee has <a href="https://www.ntd.com/house-sets-2-hearings-on-minnesota-fraud_1116793.html">called state officials</a> to testify about what it describes as “massive fraud” in Minnesota’s social services programs, with a first hearing scheduled for Jan. 7 and a second planned for Feb. 19.

Citizen journalism has propelled nationwide attention to alleged daycare fraud schemes in Minnesota. Attorney General Pam Bondi credited independent journalist Nick Shirley for raising the issue’s profile, noting that nearly 100 individuals have been charged so far.

In a separate development, Hilton Hotels <a href="https://x.com/HiltonNewsroom/status/2008522493171298503?s=20">stated on Jan. 6</a> that it was cutting ties with an independently owned Minnesota franchise after the hotel canceled a planned stay by ICE agents, citing the hotel's failure to meet brand standards.
