The family of Diane Keaton has revealed that the celebrated actress died from pneumonia on Oct. 11, expressing appreciation for the outpouring of support following her passing.

"The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11," the family said in a statement to <a href="https://people.com/diane-keaton-family-confirms-cause-of-death-grateful-support-11828660">People</a> magazine.

The family requested that those wishing to honor Keaton's memory consider making donations to organizations she supported during her lifetime.

"She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her," the family added.

The Oscar-winning actress died in California with family members present, a family spokesperson previously told People. Keaton was 79 years old.

Her death marked the end of a career spanning more than five decades, during which she became recognized for her unconventional acting style and distinctive fashion choices. She gained fame for delivering memorable lines such as "La-dee-da, la-dee-da" while dressed in Annie Hall's recognizable necktie, bowler hat, vest, and khakis. She also portrayed Kay Adams, who married into the Corleone crime family in The Godfather movies.

Her career breakthrough came during the 1970s, notably through her work in several Woody Allen films. She maintained her appeal across generations through a long-term collaboration with director Nancy Meyers.

She starred in diverse roles, including an executive who unexpectedly becomes a baby's guardian in "Baby Boom," a recently divorced woman in "First Wives Club," and a separated playwright who develops a romance with Jack Nicholson's music industry character in "Something's Gotta Give”.

Keaton received her first Academy Award for "Annie Hall" and garnered three more nominations for "Reds," "Marvin's Room," and "Something's Gotta Give”. During her 1978 Oscar acceptance speech, she characteristically laughed and said, "This is something.”

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in January 1946, she came from a family with no entertainment industry connections. Her mother, Dorothy Deanne Keaton, was an amateur photographer and homemaker, while her father, John Newton Ignatius "Jack" Hall, worked in civil engineering and real estate, according to <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000473/bio/">IMDb</a>.

She cultivated interests in theater and music while attending school in Santa Ana, California. After one year of college, she relocated to Manhattan to pursue acting. Because Actors' Equity already had another performer named Diane Hall, she professionally adopted her mother's maiden name, Keaton.

She studied under acclaimed acting instructor Sanford Meisner in New York, whom she later praised for giving her the confidence to "chart the complex terrain of human behavior within the safety of his guidance. It made playing with fire fun”.

Her stage career began as an understudy in the Broadway rock musical "Hair," where she attracted attention for refusing to remove her clothing during performances. In 1968, she joined Allen's Broadway production "Play It Again, Sam," earning a Tony nomination and launching their professional partnership.

She made her film debut in 1970 with "Lovers and Other Strangers," but her largest breakthrough occurred when Francis Ford Coppola cast her in "The Godfather.” The film won Best Picture and achieved legendary status, though Keaton initially had reservations about returning for the sequel before the script persuaded her.

During the 1970s, she worked with Allen on multiple projects, including "Play It Again, Sam," "Sleeper," "Love and Death," "Interiors," "Manhattan," and "Manhattan Murder Mystery”.

Allen and co-writer Marshall Brickman developed one of Keaton's most famous characters in "Annie Hall"—the appealing woman from Chippewa Falls who wins over Allen's Alvy Singer.

She demonstrated her range beyond comedy with her 1977 performance in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She subsequently appeared in Warren Beatty's "Reds" as journalist Louise Bryant, receiving Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

In the 1980s, she explored directing, producing the documentary "Heaven," music videos, and a "Twin Peaks" television episode. The 1990s brought more mature roles, including her reprisal as Kay Corleone in "The Godfather Part III" and appearances in both "Father of the Bride" films with Steve Martin. Her later films included "Book Club" in 2018 and its sequel in 2023.
