Federal prosecutors have alleged that California is preventing access to voter registration records amid an ongoing federal court dispute over the state's voter roll maintenance practices.

In a social media <a href="https://x.com/USAttyEssayli/status/2063664190473351169">post</a> on Sunday, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli claimed that California has declined to provide voter registration data requested by the Department of Justice. According to the DOJ, the records are necessary to review the accuracy of the state's voter rolls and evaluate compliance with federal election requirements.

He said some first-time voters can register using documents such as gym membership cards, insurance cards, or employee IDs.

California election officials, meanwhile, have defended the system, citing safeguards including signature matching, ballot tracking, and post-election audits.
