A driver rammed a van into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) vehicles Sunday afternoon during immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte, injuring a federal law enforcement officer, authorities said.

The incident occurred near University City as DHS agents were conducting an operation tied to the agency’s newly launched Operation Charlotte’s Web in the city. According to <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1990249095911350330?s=20">DHS</a>, “a United States citizen weaponized his vehicle, driving a large van at law enforcement while they were conducting an operation.”

“He immediately fled the scene, starting a dangerous high-speed chase through a densely populated area,” according to DHS. “During the chase, he attempted to ram into law enforcement vehicles— posing a serious public safety threat. As agents were boxing him in— the driver proceeded to ram law enforcement vehicles in an attempt to escape. When the driver was arrested, a firearms [sic] was found in the vehicle.”

One law enforcement officer was injured in the incident. The suspect, who fled after ramming his vehicle into officers, has a history of arrests for resisting law enforcement, public disturbance, and intoxication or disruptive conduct, according to DHS.

The incident occurred as DHS increased federal activity in Charlotte under Operation Charlotte’s Web. <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/11/15/dhs-launches-operation-charlottes-web-target-criminal-illegal-aliens-terrorizing">Announced</a> Friday, the campaign targets what the department described as “criminal illegal aliens who flocked to the Tar Heel State because they knew sanctuary politicians would protect them.” DHS stated that nearly 1,400 detainers in North Carolina were not honored, which resulted in “releasing criminal illegal aliens into North Carolina’s neighborhoods.”

"Americans should be able to live without fear of violent criminal illegal aliens hurting them, their families, or their neighbors,” said DHS Public Affairs Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “We are surging DHS law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed. There have been too many victims of criminal illegal aliens. President Trump and Secretary Noem will step up to protect Americans when sanctuary politicians won’t.”

In a press release, the department highlighted several examples of offenders freely released despite ICE detainers, including individuals arrested on charges ranging from murder to statutory sex offenses, sexual exploitation of a minor, weapons violations, and repeated DWIs.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein <a href="https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2025/11/14/statement-governor-josh-stein-border-patrol-north-carolina">released</a> a statement Friday emphasizing public safety while criticizing the federal approach. “Public safety is the top priority for all of us in government – and that means fighting crime, not stoking fear or causing division,” Stein said. He urged residents to remain peaceful, follow the law, and notify local law enforcement if they witness inappropriate behavior by federal agents.

“We follow the law. We remain peaceful. We do not allow ourselves to be provoked. We stand with our neighbors. And when we see injustice, we bear witness. If you see any inappropriate behavior, use your phones to record and notify local law enforcement, who will continue to keep our communities safe long after these federal agents leave. That’s the North Carolina way,” the governor said.

Stein said he would stay in contact with local and state officials “to keep people safe, respect the rule of law, and support our people.”
