Comments by President Donald Trump about potentially taking control of Greenland are drawing reactions from Europe. Leaders from several major European powers issued a joint statement today backing Denmark and Greenland—saying the Arctic island belongs to its people.

The leaders stressed that decisions concerning Greenland should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone. They also said Arctic security must be handled collectively with NATO allies, including the United States. They said European nations have increased their military presence, activities, and investments in the region to deter adversaries.

Trump has repeatedly said the United States needs Greenland for national security purposes. Its strategic position between Europe and North America makes it critical to U.S. ballistic missile defense systems—and its mineral resources are seen as key to reducing reliance on Chinese exports. Greenland’s Prime Minister said yesterday that his government wants stronger ties with Washington, adding that residents should not fear an imminent U.S. takeover.
