Thousands of residents living in the burned areas of Los Angeles are facing evacuation orders and warnings as the strongest storm of the season moves into southern California.

The evacuation orders and warnings went into effect early Thursday morning and will stay in place until 2 p.m. Friday.

The <a href="https://www.weather.gov/lox/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Weather Service</a> has predicted a “high risk of flooding and burn scar debris flows” as the Los Angeles area is expected to receive between an inch and a half and three inches of rain from the storms this week.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) <a href="https://lafd.org/alert/evacuation-warnings-recently-burned-areas-02122025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">issued an emergency alert</a> announcing evacuation orders for specific addresses and warnings for several areas especially susceptible to heavy downpours.

Access to the Pacific Palisades will be limited to residents only while the warnings are in effect. The Palisades Fire, which erupted on Jan. 7, burned 23,000 acres. Evacuation warnings are also in effect for many areas within the Eaton Fire burn zone including the Altadena areas near the San Gabriel foothills.

<a href="https://x.com/NotifyLA/status/1889821133563670595">High-risk houses</a> in the warning areas will be visited by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) with specific evacuation orders.

Officials <a href="https://x.com/CountyofLA/status/1889854575785681263">encouraged</a> residents to heed the advice of law enforcement.

"If you decide to stay in your property in an evacuated area, debris from the burned-scar areas and storm may impede roads and we may not be able to reach you," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a <a href="https://x.com/CountyofLA/status/1889757808335126570">press conference</a>. "That is not a good scenario."

Crews have been preparing for the heavy rainfall by cleaning debris basins, installing concrete barriers, and placing sandbags in fire zones ahead of this week's storms.

The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/smmusd/posts/pfbid0387EPcbgKsHmNqSGcpdsHUC4747cGfL3Q9sZzREnQ51oLRnq7L2358oY5X5AkLpm7l">Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District</a> also announced that all four of its public campuses would be closed Thursday due to road closures and weather concerns.

Pockets of heavy rain began early Thursday morning with heavier rain in the afternoon. Lighter showers are expected to continue Friday before drier and warmer weather conditions hit Southern California for the weekend.
