The shooter who opened fire at Evergreen High School in Colorado on Wednesday has been identified as 16-year-old Desmond Holly, a student who was "radicalized by some extremist network,"  according to authorities on Thursday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office declined to reveal further details on the teen's radicalization.

Authorities revealed the teen's identity during a <a href="https://x.com/jeffcosheriffco/status/1966192529264742613">press conference</a> and shared a <a href="https://x.com/jeffcosheriffco/status/1966192660575842773">photo</a> of him on social media.

Gunfire erupted just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on school grounds and spilled onto a nearby street, where one victim was shot. Initially, authorities said the shooting was contained on campus.

The student used a revolver and repeatedly fired the weapon, according to authorities.

"We know that the suspect had a handgun," Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley told reporters. "He had to keep reloading. He would fire and reload, fire and reload, fire and reload. This went on and on. And as he did that, he tried to find new targets."

The school was placed on lockdown and doors were sealed, which prevented the suspect from reaching more students, Kelley said.

The teen suspect rode the bus to school that morning, the spokesperson added.

No officers were on site when the attack began. The school's full-time school resource officer was on medical leave, according to authorities.  The part-time replacement left the high school around 10:45 a.m. to respond to a nearby incident.

Two students were wounded in the shooting. The shooter took his own life.

The high school has been closed for the rest of the week, <a href="https://evergreen.jeffcopublicschools.org/news/news-details/~board/evergreen-high-school-news/post/important-update-5-care-for-our-community-no-school-911-and-912">according to officials</a>.

Authorities are investigating whether the attack was targeted or random and said during the press conference that based on evidence so far "it seems like it could be a bit of both."

The shooting remains under investigation.
