An armed man is dead after ramming a vehicle into a Detroit-area synagogue on Thursday, according to authorities.

The individual “drove with purpose” and breached the doors of Temple Israel, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters at the scene.

“At least one individual came to the temple. Security saw him, engaged him in gunfire,” Bouchard said.

The suspect has been identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized citizen born in Lebanon, according to federal officials.

Ghazali came to the United States in 2011 on an immediate relative visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and was granted U.S. citizenship in 2016, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Jennifer Runyan, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, called the crime a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community" and said at a news conference Thursday that the FBI is leading the investigation.

Investigators have not determined a motive yet.

“What drove this person into action has to be determined by the investigation,” said Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.

None of the synagogue’s staff, teachers, or the 140 children at its early childhood center were injured, Bouchard said.

The vehicle came to a stop in the hallway of the synagogue. A fire ignited at one point, according to the sheriff, setting the car ablaze. The exact cause of that fire is still under investigation.

One of the security guards at the synagogue was injured and knocked unconscious after being hit by the car, but is expected to recover.

Temple Israel, located in West Bloomfield Township, describes itself as the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, with 12,000 members, <a href="https://www.temple-israel.org/home.html">according to its website</a>. It has an early childhood education center and offers educational programs for families and adults.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a <a href="https://x.com/GovWhitmer/status/2032148753818202118?s=20">statement</a> saying she was tracking developments.

“This is heartbreaking,” <a href="https://x.com/GovWhitmer/status/2032148753818202118?s=20">Whitmer said.</a> “Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel also issued a statement and condemned hatred against the Jewish community.

“Antisemitism has no place in Michigan and cannot be tolerated,” <a href="https://x.com/MIAttyGen/status/2032160951135269313?s=20">Nessel wrote</a>. “ In moments like these, it’s more important than ever that we come together, stand with our neighbors, confront hate whenever it appears, and build stronger communities.”
