A federal grand jury in South Carolina indicted a Chinese national on April 14 for conspiracy to obstruct justice.

The Chinese national, Yuan Li, joined the U.S. navy 3 years ago after being discharged from the Army. What caught authorities’ attention was Li’s application for U.S. citizenship, where Li allegedly listed a fraudulent address in San Francisco as his current residence.

Investigators later discovered a foreign national reached out to Li through a Chinese social media app, Red Note. The foreign national tried to buy information that Li obtained in his capacity as a service member. When Li learned he was under investigation, he allegedly asked an accomplice to delete messaging apps from his phone and factory-reset his electronic devices, which would have deleted records of his contact with the foreign national.
